Want to grow your own food, but not sure where to start? Try your green thumb and start with fresh herbs! Herbs are relatively easy to grow and don’t take up a lot of space. Flavoring your food with herbs instead of unhealthy fats or added sodium is a wholesome way to pack both flavor and nutrients into every bite.

Fun Fact: “Oregano” is a Greek word meaning “delight of the mountains”.

Follow these simple tips to start your own indoor herb garden:

  • Pick two or three herbs to start with. Options could include basil, oregano, thyme, cilantro, parsley, or mint.
  • Keep the soil moist by covering the container with plastic wrap or a plastic bag until seedlings immerge.
  • Research specific conditions (water, sunlight, spacing, etc.) needed for each herb you plant to grow.
  • Place your plants by a southern facing window as it will likely get the most sunlight.
  • Keep your herbs at a temperature range of 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Make sure your pots allow for drainage but also make sure they won’t leak out and ruin your windowsill. Try placing a metal, glazed ceramic, or plastic dish under your pot for protection. Avoid using a clay dish as these can allow moisture to seep through.
  • Be patient – It can take time for herbs to grow from their seedlings. Give your herbs the love and time that they need.
